Elmer Walter Mattson (1932-2022)

Elmer Walter (Wally) Mattson passed away on March 25, 2022 after a long illness.  He was 89 years old.

A lifelong resident of Maynard, Wally was the only child of Hjalmar Teodor Valfrid (Elmer Walfred) and Katherine (Lawlor) Mattson. He was a 1950 graduate of Maynard High School, a 1952 graduate in electrical wiring from the Benjamin Franklin Institute of Technology, and then in the US Army from 1952-1954 as a Private 1st Class,15th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Infantry Division and served at the DMZ in Korea, where he landed on the day of the Korean Armistice. 

Wally was predeceased by his wife of 49 years, Jean C. (Lorentson) Mattson, and a son, Elmer Walter Mattson Jr. He leaves behind children Jane McGreal of Maynard, Kenneth Mattsson of Arlington, and Robert Mattson of Upton, as well as a grandson Samuel Mattson of Upton. 

He worked as a master electrician and maintenance worker at GCA Corporation, Digital Equipment, Concord Academy, and Maynard Supply.  He was a founding member of the Nashoba Apple Corps camping club, and became a leader in the National Campers & Hikers Association (NCHA) with Jean as Field Directors and State Directors. He was also an active member in the VFW, Maynard Historical Society and the Assabet Village Minutemen and participated in the 1976 reenactments in Lexington and Concord, as well as giving historical presentations on the history of American and regional flags.

Visiting hours are Friday, April 1, 2022, from 4-7 p.m., at Fowler-Kennedy Funeral Home, 42 Concord St., Maynard. A graveside service in Glenwood Cemetery, Great Road (Rte. 117), Maynard, will be held Saturday April 2, 2022, at 10 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in his name to Buddy Dog Humane Society, 151 Boston Post Road, Sudbury, MA 01776.
