Alfred Lorentson Passes in US
LITTLE RIDGETON - It was with deep regret that many friends along the Border learned of the death July 4th, in Palm Springs, Cal., of Alfred N. Lorentson, 75, a former well-known resident of Little Ridgeton. Although in failing health for some time, news of this passing came as a shock to all who knew him.
Funeral services were held in Palm Springs July 7. He was born in Davenport, Iowas, Feb. 9, 1883, eldest son of the late John and Cecelia Lorentson, who later returned to their native Sweden for a few years, before coming to Canada and taking up land at Little Ridgeton, where, as pioneer settlers, they made their home.
As a young man, Mr. Lorentson received his education at Upper Little Ridgeton School and later went to Waltham, Mass., where he became a skilled machinist

Hello Ken!
I'm sending some information that may be valuable for you I hope.Enclosed you can also find a picture of
the house that still is called "Rödakärr". It is situated in the forrests between Lugnås and Böja in
Västergötland. I will send you some more pictures and an adress to a man whom have done some research
of the ancesters from the first marriage of Maja-Lisa Andersdotter (Hjelm/Johnsson) Hurtig.
Back to the children of the marriage between Anders and Inga Kajsa, Milda came back to Sweden with her
husband Teodor Tornell and they settled down in Ullervad, Västergötland not so far from Lugnås. I have
visited Milda when I was a child, and my mother have told me that Milda and Teodor visited my parents home
a few times. They had a son, Arthur he stayed in Maynard and got married to a woman called Helmi. So far I
can see came Augusta back to Sweden too. Milda was born in the same year as my grandmother (farmor),
and became lifelong friends.
I am not sure but Anna Maria may has been married twice, do you know if that is correct?
What was your greatgrandfathers (farfarsfar) name, I found a name Erik Mattson could it be him?
Anna Maria and Erik? had two boys.
Their names were Hjalmar Theodor Valfrid born in 1890 and Anton Bernhard born in 1892.

Hej Ken!

Far
Anders Svensson Billqvist, husar, f. 1812-04-30 i Örtofta, d. 1864-05-27 i Allarp 2, Ask. Gift med

----------------------------

Olof Lorensson (born in Virke parish December 20, 1854)
A boy named Olof was born out of wedlock in the parish of Virke on December 20 1854 as son of Johanna Bengtsdotter, formerly employed as a servant at Virke No 1 Bostället, now unemployed. Olof was baptised on January 1, 1855. Godmother: the maidservant Kjerstina Bengtsdotter from Torrlösa parish. Witnesses at the christening: the crofter Anders Pehrsson from Remmarlöv and Ola Nilsson from Näs. Johanna was 25 years old when she gave birth to Olof. (A copy of the birthrecord from Virke is enclosed).
Olof's early childhood was probably difficult. He and his mother at first lived on the property of a farmer, his wife and children. Since Bengta was not actually employed by that family she was noted in the parish records as a person without a fixed abode. It must have been very difficult for her to make ends meet. In 1857 Olof's mother married Lars Peter Lorensson and he moved with her to the parish of Reslöv. (A copy of the migration certificate "flyttningsattest" is enclosed).
According to the Reslöv parish household records (AI:23, page 3) Lars Peter Lorentson acknowledged Olof as his own son. (A copy of Reslöv AI:23, page 3, is enclosed, including an enlargement of the clergyman's note about Lars Peter Lorentson's acknowledgement). Olof grew up with his parents and siblings in Reslöv in a little cottage on called Mosse Hus at Reslöv nr 10. In 1871 he left home to work as a farmhand at Östra Karaby nr 7. (Östra Karaby household book, 1867-1873. AI:8, page 99) In 1871 he returned to Reslöv parish again to work on another farm.
In Reslöv household records 1876-1880, AI:37, page 181, the clergyman has noted that Olof has been living in North America since 1872 and has been considered as definitely having emigrated by 1878.
Lars Petter Lorensson
A boy named Lars Petter was born out of wedlock in Helsingborg on November 13, 1828 as son of the maid servant Lovisa Lind. As you already have been informed, the name of the father was not noted in the birth record. He was christened on the 14th of November 1828. (Helsingborg town parish, birthrecords 1828).
The spelling of his name varies in different sources. In the early records his first names are registered as Lars Petter, in later ones as Lars Peter. As regards the surname Lorensson, lots of different spellings are rendered in the records.
Lars Petter and his mother Lovisa Lind moved from Helsingborg to the parish of Viken where Lovisa was born and her mother Ingar Andersdotter still lived. The migration certificate issued in Helsingborg in 1829 states that Lovisa Lind was a woman with a good reputation ("wälfrejdad") although she had given birth to a child out of wedlock.
On November 19 1830 Lars Petter's mother Lovisa Lind was married in Viken to Lorentz Ericksson Leijon from Helsingborg. Lorentz Leijon was employed as "stadsmätare", i e an official whose duty it was to supervise the obligatory weighing and measuring of goods in the town.
Lars Petter grew up in Helsingborg with his parents and sisters. The family first lived at Nr 245 and then at No 99. (Helsingborg city parish, 1831-1837, page 319).
Lars Peter Lorensson married Johanna Bengtsdotter on October 4, 1857 in the parish of Stora Harrie (adjacent to the parish of Virke). (Marriage certified on migration certificate, dated October 4, 1857). Johanna Bengtsdotter moved from Virke to Reslöv in connection with her marriage. According to the parish records of Reslöv Lars Peter Lorentzon acknowledged Johanna's son Olof as his own. (Reslöv household records 1858, AI:24, page 3). Johanna Bengtsdotter had given birth to a son named Nils on July 13, 1851 in the parish of Gullarp. Nils was brought up together with the other children born in the marriage of Johanna and Lars Peter.
The following children were born to Lars Peter Lorensson and Johanna Bengtsdotter according to the parish household records of Reslöv:
-
- Olof, born on December 12, 1854 in Virke,
- Bengta, born on May 21, 1858, in Reslöv,
- Louise, born on July 25, 1860, in Reslöv,
- Carl, born on Paril 30, 1864, in Reslöv,
- Johannes (twin) born on February 3, 1868 in Reslöv
- Maria (twin) born on February 3, 1868 in Reslöv.
Lars Peter Lorensson was noted as having left Reslöv for North America on July 22, 1869. He stayed there for five years, returning to his wife and children living at Mosse hus on Reslöv nr 10 on December 1, 1874. Olof had gone to America in 1872. Carl went in 1881 and then in 1882 the rest of the family left, that is Lars Peter Lorensson, his wife Johanna Bengtsdotter, Lovisa (Louise) and the twins.
Lorentz Ericsson Leijon (father of Lars Peter Lorensson)
A boy named Lorentz was born in the parish of Helsingborg on December 26 1804 as son of Eric Peter Lejon and his wife Catharina Jacobsdotter.
Lorentz became a "stadsmätare" (city measurer") in Helsingborg. He married Lovisa Lind (born in Viken on July 30 1805) on November 19, 1830 in the parish of Viken. In their marriage (and before) the following children were born:
- Lars Petter, born on Nobmeber 13, 1828 in Helsingborg,
- Ingrid Christina, born on March 8, 1831 in Viken,
- Johanna, born on March 21, 1833 in Helsingborg, died October 23, 1834,
- Johannes, born on November 9, 1834 in Helsingborg, died on January 22, 1835.
- Olof, born on August 24, 1836 in Helsingborg
Lovisa Lind died in Helsingborg on August 15 1841, aged 36 years. The funeral took place on August 20. The cause of death was "hektik", which is the same as tuberculosis. (Death and burial records of Helsingborg S).
Lorentz Ericsson Lejon (the spellings of his names varied in all the documents) died in Helsingborg on January 6, 1842, at the age of 37. The cause of death was "nervfeber" which is the same as typhoid fever. (Death and burial records of Helsingborg S).
The sum of money you have invested has hereby been used up. I am sending this letter by airmail together with copies of some of the records as well as by email.
Yours sincerely

Dear Marian:
With reference to your letter of October 9 I have now searched the archives for further information on the families of Lorentz Ericsson Lejon and Lovisa Lind as well as on the family of Johanna Bengtsdotter.
1. Johanna Bengtsdotter, born in Västra Strö on April 28, 1830, as daughter of Bengt Larsson and Hanna Andersdotter. (source: Västra Strö parish birth records).
Johanna lived with her parents and sisters in Västra Strö parish until 1836 when the family moved back to Torrlösa where her father made his living as a "torpare", i e crofter, that is to say that he was provided with a little cottage on somebody's land and with it a plot of ground big enough to cultivate a bit for the family's subsistence and perhaps feed a cow and a pig. In return he would have to work for the landowner.
Johanna's father Bengt Larsson died in Torrlösa, probably before 1841. Unfortunately no death and burial records have been saved between 1832-1862. There are no household records for Torrlösa between 1832-1841.
The Torrlösa household records 1841-1845, AI:5, show that Johanna is living with her widowed mother and sisters at Skälleröd. In 1844 the family had become completely impoverished and moved to the poorhouse in Wisstofta (in Torrlösa parish). Johanna left the poorhouse in 1845, probably as soon as she had been confirmed and moved to nr 13 Grytinge in the same parish where she was employed as a servantgirl for a family. In 1846 she went to work on a farm at Vittskövle nr 2 in Torrlösa and in 1847 she moved to Hallsfarm (a big property) in the same parish. In 1849 Johanna moved from Hallsfarm to St. Gryderup (Torrlösa). I have not tried to trace her further than that. You already know about the birth of her son Olof and her marriage to Lars Peter Lorensson in 1857.
2. Bengt Larsson, born September 11, 1801 (father of Johanna Bengtsdotter)
All household records in which Bengt Larsson has been found registered, state that he was born in the parish of Torrlösa in 1801. He has not, however, been found registered in the birthrecords of Torrlösa parish. I checked the adjacent parish of Skrävlinge (same vicar), with the same negative results. I checked every moving certificate that has been filed on him in various parish archives (depending on where and when he moved) to see if a mistake had been made somewhere -- all with negative results. His place of birth was always Torrlösa.
I then tackled the problem by a different strategy. First I tried to find a marriage record for Bengt Larsson and Hanna Andersdotter. Their first child Kerstina was born in Torrlösa on June 2, 1826. That meant that the marriage must have taken place before that date. In the marriage records of Torrlösa I found a marriage registered on October 30 1825 between the soldier Bengt Äng and Hanna Andersdotter. There was no marriage registered between anybody named Bengt Larsson and Hanna Andersdotter. I believe that Bengt Äng is identical with Bengt Larsson. When a person served as a soldier in Sweden it was common practise for him to adopt a new surname while in service -- a surname not based on a patronymicon in order to avoid the confusion which would arise when many people had the same name.
In the Torrlösa household records of 1826, AI:3, page 105 I found the following couple registered as living in a house belonging to Hallsfarm:
- farmhand Bengt Larsson, aged 24 years, born in Torrlösa ("son of Lars Bengtsson at Vittskövle")
- wife Hanna, born 1801-07-12
- daughter Kerstina, born on June 2, 1826
We have thus obtained information about the father of Bengt Larsson. I checked the Torrlösa household records 1807-1810, page 15 (29) and found the following family registered as living in a cottage in the settlement of Vittskövle in Torrlösa parish:
- Lars Bengtsson, born on March 16, 1764 in the parish of Reslöv,
- wife Gunnil, born on April 10, 1760 in Halmstad,
- son Anders born on September 24, 1794 in Torrlösa
- son Bengt, born on June 13, 1801 in Torrlösa
This must be the right family! The date of birth for Bengt (June 13 instead of November 11) still did not give any result in the Torrlösa birthrecords for 1801. I checked that whole year in the birthbook and also the year 1800 and 1802-1806 -- all with negative result. The clergy had simply forgotten to register his birth in that book although he is registered in the household records. There can be no other explanation.
In the marriage between Bengt Larsson and Hanna Andersdotter (born on June 12 1801 in Torrlösa) the following children were born according to the household records of Torrlösa and Västra Strö:
- Kerstina born on June 2, 1826 in Torrlösa,
- Anna born on March 29, 1828 in Torrlösa,
- Johanna born on April 28, 1830 in Västra Strö,
- Gunild, born on december 22, 1832 in Västra Strö,
- Hanna, born on November 11, 1825.
Bengt made his living as a "torpare" according to the household records of Västra Strö and Torrlösa. He had moved with his family from Torrlösa to Västra Strö in 1828 and returned to Torrlösa again in 1836. (Source: household records of Västra Strö 1830-1841, AI:2, page 94.
Due to loss of records I have not been able to find information concerning Bengt Larsson's death, which seems to have occurred some time between 1836 and 1841.
Hanna Andersdotter (wife of Bengt Larsson), born in Torrlösa July 12, 1801
The birth of Hanna has not been found registered in the birthrecords of Torrlösa in 1801. By checking every page in the Torrlösa household record for 1810 vol. AI:2, I found the following information about a family registered in a cottage in the village of Torrlösa:
- Anders Olsson, born on September 25, 1762 in Torrlösa,
- wife Hanna, born April 23, 1756 in Torrlösa,
- daughter Elsa, born on October 12, 1794, in Torrlösa
- daughter Sissalia, born on May 10, 1797 in Torrlösa
- daughter Hanna, born on July 12, 1801 in Torrlösa
Eric Peter Leijon (father of Lorentz Ericsson Leijon)
We know that Eric Peter Leijon was living in Helsingborg in 1804 since his son Lorenz Peter was born there. The oldest household record from the Helsingborg garrison covers the years 1820-1826. On page 14 the following was registered:
Nr 6, Erik Lejon, born 1777
- wife (no name)
- son (no name)
- son (no name
Their names were crossed out which indicated that they had all moved, but no information was given as to when or to what destination. I checked various indexes which we have for Helsingborg and found the family registered in Helsingborgs rural parish AI:7, 1828-1834, page 230:
- former cavalryman Erik Lejon, born 1878 in Helsingborg,
- wife Katrina Jacobsdotter, born on January 11, 1781 in Helsingborg,
- son Carl Johan, born March 8, 1825 in Helsingborg,
- daughter Maria, born on June 16, 1817,
Whatever other children that may have been born in the marriage between Eric Peter Leijon and Catharina Jacobsdotter, had left home before 1828.
Eric Lejon died at Filborna in Helsingborgs rural parish on January 30 1839, aged 61 years. . His wife had died before him.
The father of Eric Peter Leijon
Unfortunately no exact date for his birth was given in the household records of Helsingborg. I checked the birthrecords of Helsingborg 1777-1778. I found no boy named Eric Peter on any date 1777.1778. There was a boy named Eric born on September 26, 1778 as son of the farmer Johan Johansson and his wife Bengta Jönsdotter at Stubbarp (Helsingborg rural parish). More information is needed however in order to ascertain if that Eric is identical to Eric Peter Leijon. I would have thought that his father would have carried the name "Peter".
Mother of Eric Peter Leijon
A girl named Cathrina was born in Helsingborg on January 10, 1781 as daughter of the artilleryman Jacob Borgström. (source: Helsingborg birthrecords 1781).
That is as far as I managed for the sum you send. I am sending this rapport by airmail and e-mail. You also asked about copies of marriage-records. They can only be obtained from Landsarkivet. We have no attractive diplomas or anything like that -- all we can do is to make a photocopy of the original marriage-record.
Yours sincerely

Dear Marian!
I have now completed the investigation you have asked and paid for in a letter dated March 27.
I will begin with your 4rth question, concerning a possible French connection. I see no sign of such a connection in the case of your family. Carl XIV Johan Bernadotte did not set foot in Sweden until 1810. On the other hand Sweden made use of foreign troops in its many wars during the 17th and 18th centuries. Some soldiers did follow their commanders to Sweden and did settle down, marry and have children. What evidence did the archivist present when your relative visited Sweden in 1976? Lejon means lion in Swedish and that must have been a very appropriate surname for a good brave soldier. As you already know that is how Petter Leijon made his living and in Sweden young men who joined the army or navy were given an additional surname in order to make identification easier than it would have been had they all been known by the patronymicon (son of Anders or Peter, or Eric etc.).
I mentioned in my last letter that I was not sure I had found the right Erik born in Helsingborg 1778. The year of birth for Eric Peter Lejon (Leijon) was sometimes given as 1777 and sometimes as 1778 in the household records. I now made a check on the 1777 records and there found a boy named Eric Peter, born on August 13, 1777 as son of the "husar" (cavalryman/hussar) Johan Peter Grotte and his wife Gunnela Assersdotter in Helsingborg, (Helsingborg S birthrecords C:3. I have been able to exclude the possibility of Eric Peter being born on Sept 26, 1778 as the son of Johan Johansson in Stubbarp. A deed of inventory drawn up on the death of Johan Johansson lists his children and Eric Peter was not among them.
I have not been able to find out when or where Johan Peter Grotte and his wife married, or even where they lived in Helsingborg, since their adress unfortunately was not registered in the birthrecord. The name Grotte could be a variation of Groth which was less unusual and possibly of German origin. I think Johan Peter Grotte and his wife must have gone on living in Helsingborg or kept that link alive, since their son Eric Peter at least lived there when adult.
2. Information about the orphaned children of Lorentz Leijon and Lovisa Lind
Lovisa Lind died first, on August 15, 1841 and that must have created a major crisis in the family since as you have noted, her children were young and still needed a mother. When their father Lorentz died the following year the catastrophe was complete. The oldest child Lars Petter was 14 years old and that means that he had reached an age when most youngsters were expected to leave home and start to earn a living. Ingrid Christina was only eleven and Olof six years old. These two were placed in different families. The families who received them were paid by the city Helsingborg to do so. It does not seem to have been poor relief, at least that is not the term used - perhaps it was a case of the city taking some sort of responsibility for the fate of the children of Lorentz Lejon since he had been in the employment of Helsingborg as its "measurer".
Olof (Lorensson) born 1836-08-24, was first placed in the home of a city watchman (city guard) "stadsvakt", named Per Hansson and his family, which included children of the same age as Olof. Olof remained with them until 1847 when he was 11 years old. From then on he was on his own. He was apprenticed to A.P.Wingård who had several apprentices. Conditions cannot have been very good for these young boys, because it is noted in the household record that several of them had run away, but been forced to return. Olof was one of these, and he also had run away but was forced to remain until 1851 when he was apprenticed to a ropemaker named Lars Peter Fristedt at No 282 D in Helsingborg. (Helsingborg S, AI:42, 1852-1855, page 1027).
In 1857 he moved to Nr 85 in Helsingborg and on February 8, 1859 the parish office issued a certificate that he was going to sea, i e had become a seaman. (Helsingborg S, AI:44, 1855-1861, page 286). According to Helsingborg S, AI:63, 1866-1869, page 401, he was married to Johanna Olsdotter on December 16, 1865. Johanna was born in Svalöv on August 3, 1840. The couple moved to 349 A in 1867. No children were born in their marriage. On June 10, 1872 the seaman Olof Lorensson left Helsingborg for North America according to Helsingborg S household records AI:59, 1869-1874, page 280. His wife was left behind. I suppose they had planned that she was to follow him once he had found work and somewhere to live. That never happened however. Johanna Olsdotter waited six years for him. On March 3 1880 she was granted a divorce and on March 21, 1880 the banns for marriage were read for her and a pilot (for ships) named Jeppa Larsson living at Nr 19 Fiskaren in Helsingborg. I have not attempted to trace her life any further than that. (Helsingborg S AI:74, 1880-1884, page 411).
Ingrid Christina Lorensdotter (born March 8, 1831) was first placed in the home of a the headmaster of one of the schools, H.S. Åkerberg and his family. (Helsingborgs S AI:37, 1842-1847, page 61.) She remained there until 1844, when she was placed in the family of a labourer named Per Nilsson and his family. (Helsingborg S AI:38, page 388). It was when she lived with them that the household record registered that her upkeep was paid for by the city. In 1847 she moved to woman named Johanna Pålsdotter who was not married but took care of young children in return for money. (Helsingborg S 1847-1852, page 401). She stayed there only for a few months. In the same year (1847) she moved to nr 203 where she was employed as a maid in the household of a pewterer named Stickler where she stayed until 1849. (Helsingborg S, AI:40, page 158). In 1849 she moved to Malmö. In the household record of Helsingborg S 1847-1852, AI:40, page 401, it has been recorded that she on August 28, 1851 had come to a hawker's widow named Schultze, living in Elsinore in Denmark. I have not been able to trace her any further than that.
While I was about it I checked on Lars Peter Lorensson as well. He was apprenticed to a brass foundry owned by Carl F Wolferstein at nr 189 in Helsingborg in 1842, i e immediately after the death of his father. He stayed there only one year, moving on in 1843 to become apprenticed to a tin-smith named J F Lysholm, where he remained until 1847. (Helsingborg S AI:38, 1842-1847, page 109 and page 224). There I leave him.
Lovisa Lind's parents
Lovisa was born on July 30 1805 in the parish of Viken as daughter of Olof Lind and his wife Inger Andersdotter. (Väsby birth records - which include Viken, C:2, page 353)
Olof Lind, born approximately 1768
Olof was born approximately 1768 in ?... as son of Nils...??
He married Ingar Andersdotter who was born in the province of Småland on January 25, 1767. I searched the marriage records of Viken with negative result for the years 1790-1796. The marriage must have taken place in some other parish. Unfortunately the household records of Viken contain no information as to which parish in Småland Ingar came from and therefore I cannot check if it was there their wedding took place.
Olof Lind made his living as a skipper, captain of a small ship ("skeppare") and was registered as such in the household records of Viken.
In the marriage between Olof Lind and Ingar the following children were born, all in Viken at nr 21, according to the Viken household records AI:1, 1813-1818:
- Anna, born on October 1, 1796,
- Nils, born on November 11, 1798,
- Lovisa, born on June 30, 1805,
- Peter, born on December 5, 1808.
Olof Lind and his family were relatively well off according to the deed of inventory (bouppteckning) which was drawn up after Olof's death. I have made a photocopy of it and will send it to you by mail. It shows that he was part owner of the following vessels:
_ of the yacht Anna Catharina with all its effects,
1/8 of the ketch Christina Magdalena with all its effects,
1/8 of the sloop Sancte Christina with all its effects,
_ of an old herringboat with all ints effects.
They also owned a cow, one sheep, 1 pig and one goose. A list of everything they owned, including Olof's clothing, is listed in the inventory.
Olof Lind drowned on July 21, 1812, somewhere off the coast in the area of Norrköping (Sweden). He was only 44 years old. Lovisa was only seven years old. Olof's widow Ingar (born 1867-01-25) died on April 24, 1846, aged 79 years 3 months, and her last years must have been very difficult as she was registered as "utfattig", i e destitute. (Viken household records AI:2, 1829-1845)
Catharina Jacobsdotter (born January 10, 1781)wife of Eric Peter Lejon, mother of Lorentz Ericsson Leijon, grandmother of Lars Petter Lorensson)
According to the household records of Helsingborg L (rural parish) AI:8, 1833-1841, Catharina Jacobsdotter was born in Helsingborg on January 11, 1781. I found a girl named Cathrina registered on January 10, 1781 in Helsingborg birth records as daughter of Jacob Borgström. (Helsingborg S birth records 1781). The name of Cathrina's mother was not registered in the birthrecord. I therefore checked the birthrecords "backwards" looking for children with the same father who were born before 1781, hoping that the name of the mother had been registered for them. I found a girl named Johanna, born on September 11, 1778 in Helsingborg as daughter of the artilleryman (gunner) Jacob Borgström and his wife Brita Mårtensdotter. Since the name Borgström was not common and the births of the two girls are so close in time and place Brita Mårtensdotter is in all probability the mother of Catharina as well as of Johanna.
The marriage records of Helsingborg S have registered a marriage between Jacob Lorentsson and Britha Mårtensdotter on June 5, 1771. Is this Jacob the same person as Jacob Borgström? Could it be that Jacob Borgström in fact had a father named Lorens? No deed of inventories are to be found in the Helsingborg archive for Jacob Borgström or for Jacob Lorensson which is unfortunate as that would have solved the mystery. A search through the "mantal" lists (taxation records) might give the answer, but that is heavy work since a lot of people lived in Helsingborg and the lists are not alphabetical.
Lars Bengtsson, born on March 16, 1764 in Reslöv
A boy named Lars was born on March 16, 1764 in Reslöv parish as son of the hussar Bengt Risberg and his wife Kjerstina Henricsdotter at Norra Reslöv. (Reslöv birthrecords)
According to Torrlösa AI:3, 1822-1827 (Under Vittskövle ghs) Lars Bengtsson's wife Gunild (Gunilla /Gunella) was born in Halmstad on April 10, 1759. I checked the birthrecords of Halmstad (and its annex Sireköpinge) in Skåne during the years 1757-1760 with negativt result.
This is as much as I could accomplish this time. I am sending it by mail as well as email.
Yours sincerely

MRS. JOHN LORENTSON
Mrs. Cecilia Lorentson, widow of John Lorentson, passed peacefully away at her home on Park Street on Tuesday, Dec. 10, after a short illness of heart disease. She was in her 82nd year. A native of Sweden, she came to Canada with her late husband in 1889 and they took up farming on Little Ridge. After her husband's death in 1923 she made her home in St. Stephen with her daughter, Edith, and son, Axel. Her kindness earned for her a host of friends by whom she will be greatly missed.
She is mourned by four children, Miss Edith, who cared lovingly for her mother in her illness, and three sons, Alfred, in Rhode Island; Axel, at home; and Oscar, in Massachusetts; also one brother, Fred, in Massachusetts; and three granddaughters. One daughter, Annie, died in infancy.
The funeral, conducted by Rev. B. D. Earle, was held Thursday with internment in the family lot in the St. Stephen Rural Cemetary. The pallbearers were Walter Howland, Charles McKay, William Watters and Martin Madsen.
A large number of friends and neighbors attended the funeral and many beautiful floral offerings were received.

MRS. MARY LAWLOR
Requiem Mass Celebrated in St. Bridget's Church
Mrs. Mary E. Lawlor, aged sixty-five years, died at her late home on Hillside street, Monday morning at 2.30 o'clock. She had been ill for some time and for the past month, because of stomach trouble her condition has been critical.
Mar. Lawlor was born in Renews, Newfoundland, and had been a resident of Maynard twenty-five years. Besides her husband, she is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Walford Mattson, and two sons, Thomas of Maynard, and John of Cleveland, Ohio. She was a member of the Legion Auxiliary.
She was highly respected in the community and the number of floral tributes and cards of sympathy showed the grief brought to friends and neighbors by her loss.
The funeral services were held from the home on Hillside street, Wednesday morning at 8.30, with a requiem high mass at 9 o'clock, at St. Bridget's church, of which she was a member. The bearers were George Kaler Jr., George Chidley, Martin Kane, John Kane, John Walsh of Maynard, and Charles Jackson of Worcester. Interment was in the family lot in St. Bridget's cemetary.
